Sharing the 12R's of Christmas
The Squamish Climate Action Network has shared their 12 R's of Christmas with us.
1. RETHINK
Is there a better way to celebrate Christmas that does not damage the environment?
2. RE-GIFT
Gifts don’t have to be shiny and new. They can be things you pass along to another. Used gifts are the kindest of all to the environment, as no energy or resources are expended.
3. RECYCLE
Is this gift made of recycled products, and is the gift made from materials that are easy to recycle?
4. REPAIR
Is the gift easy to repair? This will extend its life. Or as a gift, repair something for someone who has a broken object that needs to be fixed.
5. REDUCE
Reduce fuel consumption - shop locally. Look for items with less packaging.
6. REFILL
Buy refillable soaps, mugs, and containers.
7. REFUSE
Refuse corporate materialism. Refuse to buy things that come in excess packaging. Do not purchase things that are not the best option for the environment.
8. REMEMBER
Remember others in the community.Give a gift that helps others in our town; gift certificates to Helping Hands, SPCA and many other caring organizations.
9. RECREATE
Give less stuff and more memories. Enjoy recreational time with your loved ones. Tickets to sports events, a cooking lesson or a massage are excellent alternatives to packaged gifts.
10. RECHARGE
Avoid gifts that are battery- operated, or give a battery charger and rechargeable batteries as a gift.
11. ROT
Remember to compost organic waste at home or bring to Carney’s.
12. REJOICE
Rejoice in this beautiful earth, and do our part to foster a sustainable planet!
