Garbage Free Lunch Results are Coming In...
Students who participated in a Zero Waste Workshop this fall also participated in the Regional Garbage Free Lunch Challenge. The Garbage Free Lunch results are still coming in, but so far we have reductions in waste from the following classes: Ms. Hain's grade 1 class, Ms. Kubin's grade 4/5 class, Mme. Millen's grade 6 class, Ms. Allen's grade 4/5/6 class, and Ms. Gregory's grade 5 class. Students' lunches were audited on two occasions in order to see if there was a reduction in their lunchtime garbage after putting more thought into what they brought. Some common areas of improvement included the use of reusable lunch containers, versus disposable options as well as the use of reusable drink containers versus juice boxes. Congratulations to these classes, they will be entered into a draw to win a free Zero Waste pizza lunch.

Zero Waste Innovation and Leadership
Last week Zero Waste Workshops took place at Pemberton Secondary School and Lillooet Secondary School to talk about Zero Waste Innovation and Leadership. Students learned about “What Can Zero Waste Do For You?”. Students examined Zero Waste Consumerism, Zero Waste Career Options, and the concept and potential of Zero Waste Design. Zero Waste Design involves innovation and leadership in waste reduction strategies and is a very exciting movement to learn about.
Teaching Others About Zero Waste
Ms. Desbrisay's Grade 3 Class at Spring Creek Elementary School in Whistler decided today that they would like to help others learn more about how to make less garbage. They intend to teach their parents, their school buddies and others in their school, by giving them strategies to reduce their waste. This class has some great ideas to share! One effective strategy that the students came up with today was to bring some of their recyclables home. In doing so, they can reduce the amount of waste that goes into their garbage can at school as each classroom at the school is not set up to be able to recycle everything that the Recycle Depot can.
